Khelshala Structure

Since its inception in 2009, Khelshala – an after school, enrichment program has positively impacted over 150 children in Northern India. Currently, approximately 100 children attend Khelshala, with its operations spanning across two sites at Village Attawa, Chandigarh and Village Majra, Punjab. Out of these 100 children, 50 children attend regularly. From the outset, children have demonstrated tremendous growth, communication skills, academic performance, personal hygiene and citizenship both in the program itself and in their community. Khelshala conducts a developmentally-appropriate and child-centered approach with low attrition through three types of student groups:

Core Group
Children in this core group have displayed aptitude to learn and embrace the complete Khelshala curriculum consisting of academics, sports, yoga and ownership of the program as a whole. Students of this group receive five days of squash, academics and yoga/nutrition. On Sunday, they have the opportunity to compete and interact with each other through organized ‘Team’ match play. This group also includes a few students who fall under the category termed special need - explained below:

Special Needs Group These are children who have either graduated from school, or need special assistance/support. Children in this group are those who are still residing in the community, or those who are long term attendees but not able to attend the full program due to family circumstances. It is our hope that one day with consistent mentoring and guidance; these children will reach their potential in life.
Potential Group
This group consists of newly enrolled children who are observed over a three months period to ascertain their suitability to become regular members of Khelshala. Those deemed suitable are then placed in a “feeder group” to be elevated to the main group as and when places become available. Children in this group receive a full complement of 5 days of academics, 2 days of yoga and 1 day of squash per week.

Note: Ongoing monitoring, disciplinary measures are in place that continuously regulates children between these groups.
